Bath Rebellion 2020 plans

Our plans for the rebellion

We invite everyone who is sick of the lies, injustice, inequality & harm, to join us
Crisis does not have to mean collapse

Fri 28 - Mon 31 August

The call has gone out from Extinction Rebellion UK for…

Fri 28th Aug: Mass banner drop across the UK plus Fossil Fuel-focused actions

✈️ Sat 29th Aug: Airports and Aviation

💮 Sun 30th Aug: Gather your community (run assemblies locally, connect, listen, learn, talks, workshops, visioning)

🏦 Mon 31st Aug: Permanent Bank ‘holiday’, finance-focused actions

🌈 These themes will unite the UK in beautiful, coordinated, dispersed actions across our nations, regions and communities as we launch our Rebellion.

So Bath XR is planning… (all socially distanced)

Tue 1 September onwards...

Extinction Rebellion South West are encouraging rebels to attend the Cardiff actions from 1 – 5 September, with plans to then go on to HS2 camp. For all the Cardiff rebellion events see here.

Two objectives: to encourage all Welsh MPs sitting in UK Parliament to sign the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill; to call for support from all other groups – a Movement of Movements.

Actions in Cardiff focusing on the following themes:

Tue 1: The future starts now

The tragic, life-changing Covid crisis shows we CAN do things differently! We must come together and seize this moment to seriously evaluate our toxic systems NOW, while we have the chance. We’re running out of time – we want the CEE Bill and we’ve no time to lose. The UK Government has been about division but borders mean nothing, we come together in solidarity.

Gather in Cardiff, actions begin:

  • Declaration of rebellion by ‘March To The Future’ into Cardiff city centre and to the UK gov offices.
  • Targeted actions around the city centre.
  • Meet at rebellion meeting point and have opening talk.
  • Set up camps.

Wed 2: Prepare for Crisis

We face a series of intersecting global crises: climate breakdown, ecological collapse, Covid-19, racial injustice – all symptoms of a toxic system that is driving us to extinction. The UK government knows the truth and is not protecting us. We say enough is enough of their criminal inaction. Today, we focus on the impact that the climate crisis is having locally and across Wales because it is impacting weather cycles, flooding, air pollution and our food security right NOW.

  • ‘Rising Tide Action’ – this is a mass participation, low risk, artistic, engagement action to highlight the rising sea levels in Cymru. This action includes boats and speeches and all kinds of amazing stuff.

Thu 3: Tell the Truth & Act Now

The UK government pays lip service to the climate and ecological crisis, while bailing out polluters and financing fossil fuel interests overseas. We are being greenwashed and the media is failing to hold the government to account. We say enough is enough of the lies and misinformation. We demand that the government and media TELL THE TRUTH and ACT NOW. 2050 is too late.

  • Media/BBC Action, alternative broadcast, Film Strike For Climate. This is likely to be multiple actions on this theme. Low-high risk actions. Lots of fun and samba!

Fri 4: Build a Better World

A better world is possible. Government can follow scientific advice and take a decisive step towards a cleaner, fairer and more sustainable economy, creating a vast number of new jobs – or it can ignore that advice by prioritising its corporate sponsors and locking us on a path to climate collapse. We will use today to examine pathways to survival. What would a green recovery look like? What energy will we use? What does a truly democratic political system look like? What is the role of Citizens’ Assemblies? We will envision a better world with creativity, love and empathy.

  • Action to highlight the need for a Citizens Assembly (CA) to be established in Cymru.
  • Large scroll to be signed by rebels to request for a CA to be set up.
  • Hold People’s Assemblies en mass.
  • Further action plans under development.

Sat 5: Everyone Together

Big March (Finale). Those who will continue, travel to HS2 camp.

It’s up to us now. All of us. Today we celebrate our differences and unite in a Movement of Movements. We will use the opportunity to highlight and amplify grassroots voices of rebellion within the wider social justice and environmental movements and express our solidarity with those who face injustice everywhere. We will make plans to move forward together to address the systemic crisis we face.

  • ‘Movement of Movements’ march, with samba band.
  • Mass participation cycle ride through the city.
  • Followed by speeches and an invitation for all movements to speak.

Sun 6: Regen at the HS2 camp

Mon 7: HS2 action

Those who will continue, travel to London as reinforcements to the London Rebellion. Probable end 13th of Sep.

XR UK says: If there are travel restrictions, we won’t cancel the Rebellion, but we will focus locally instead, for the whole period (we won’t gather in the 3 cities).

If the restrictions mean we can’t even gather in a crowd, then we will do socially distanced “coordinated solo protests” or “hybrid actions” like we did in May with similar restrictions in place.

XR rebels will push  “Greta The Lightship”  from Brighton to London during the rebellion. They want as many people as possible to make the action fun, vibrant and eye catching.
